Discussion:
diskpart to extend basic partition "volume may not be extended"
(too old to reply)

OS: Windows Server 2003 Standard, Server: IBM xSeries 235, RAID 1E
I added a new drive to add disk space to a partition. I used IBM
ServeManager to add the drive to the array. Within Windows Disk Management, I
see the unallocated space which is on the same disk (disk1). The partition
(80 GB) I want to add the unallocated space (34 GB) to does not contain the
OS or paging file and is a basic disk, NTFS. I ran the diskpart command on
the server. List volume, select volume 2, extend (did not enter size as I
want to use the entire unallocated space (34 GB). I get the following error:
"The volume you selected may not be extended." I re-ran the command and
entered a size (extend size=20000). I get the following error "The volume
size you have selected is too large for the disk. Either select a disk with
more free space, or specify a smaller volume." No matter what size I specify,
I get this error.
Please help!

Hello Tina,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

From your post, I am not sure if you have applied SP1 on the Windows Server
2003 server. If not, I suggest you check the following article and update
the version of Diskpart:
841650: The DiskPart.exe utility cannot extend a logical drive in an
extended partition in Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841650/en-us

Or please apply SP1 on the server to see if it can help.

Thanks & Regards,

Ken Zhao

Hi Tina,

The following list shows some limitations of the DiskPart utility:

DiskPart does not support extended partitions currently.
DiskPart does not support extended the system partition.
DiskPart will not format the partition volume with a file system.

If your symptom does not meet the one of scenarios above, I suspect the
issue is related to your RAID 1E configuration.

Thanks & Regards,

Ken Zhao

Hi, Ken.
Do these limitations apply to the Vista version of DiskPart.exe?

In Vista, we MUST use DiskPart to create the first, second or third
partition as an extended partition, since Disk Management will no longer do
this for us. Vista's DM automatically creates the first three partitions as
primary partitions; for the fourth partition, it automatically creates an
extended partition, then creates the 4th volume as a logical drive within
the extended partition. If we want the first partition to be an extended
partition, we must use DiskPart, because DM won't do it for us in Vista,
although it would in WinXP. (This unannounced change caught several of us
beta testers by surprise during the beta period.)

I have used Vista's Disk Management to extend the System Partition into
contiguous free space, but I haven't tried to do this with DiskPart.

What is "the partition volume"?

hmmm... I ran into some inconsistencies with Diskpart before.

sometimes it doesn't do what it should do, and this is what I did to correct
this.

1) this is not a system or boot disk !! this is important.
2) if you look at Disk Management, you see the partition at its original
size (not extended)
3) in Diskpart, you will see the partition (not volume) at its extended size
4) try Diskpart "extend filesystem" command (not documented in the diskpart
help)... see KB 832316
5) if that does not extend your filesystem the open a support case with
Microsoft and ask for a utility called "fsextend.exe" which will extend your
file systme.

The situation I encountered I had to use the last option as all others did
fail. So this "fsextend.exe" utility does actually do something else then
Diskpart..... funny as both are MS tools, you would think that the
fsextend.exe functionality is build into Diskpart.

HTH,
Edwin.

Hi Edwin,
1)correct, this is not the system or boot disk
2)correct, does not say extended
3)diskpart results:
DISKPART> list volume
Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info
---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- -------
--------- --------
Volume 0 E 80MS1 NTFS Partition 80 GB Healthy
Volume 1 F 22MS1 NTFS Partition 23 GB Healthy
Volume 2 C OS NTFS Partition 17 GB Healthy System
Volume 3 D CD-ROM 0 B Healthy

DISKPART> list disk
Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt
-------- ---------- ------- ------- --- ---
Disk 0 Online 17 GB 8001 KB
Disk 1 Online 137 GB 34 GB

DISKPART> select disk 1
Disk 1 is now the selected disk.

DISKPART> list partition
Partition ### Type Size Offset
------------- ---------------- ------- -------
Partition 1 Primary 80 GB 32 KB
Partition 2 Primary 23 GB 80 GB

The command I used to extend the basic volume:
diskpart
list volume
select volume 0
extend
(I also tried extend size=20480)

The unallocated space is 34.18 GB, unformatted. I also tried formatting it
as NTFS and tried again with no success.
Thanks

Aha !

See this

DISKPART> list partition
Partition ### Type Size Offset
------------- ---------------- ------- -------
Partition 1 Primary 80 GB 32 KB
Partition 2 Primary 23 GB 80 GB

So the first partition is Partition1, and Partition 2 starts at 80Gb offset,
after partition 1

This means that Partition 1 (and therefore volume 0) cannot grow, as it is
"blocked" by Partition 2 (which is volume 1)

so, the free space is after partition2/volume1.... so you can grow volume 1
(not volume 0)

hope this explains it...
Rgds,
Edwin.

HTH,
Edwin.

That makes sense. I guess the only thing I can do is delete the 80 gb

NTFS and restore the data from backup. Do you see any issues with doing this?

My only concern with deleting the 23 GB partition, is I have DFS setup (hub
and spoke setup) on this partition and this server is the DFS hub. The 23 GB
partition only contains 3 GB of data. Can I simply copy the data including
the DFS share to the 80 GB partition without issue? The DFS share will have
the same share name which is "setups." If I can just copy the DFS folder to
the 80 gb partition, I can delete the 23 gb partition and extend the 80 gb
partition to take the whole space and leave the DFS share on this partition.
Again, I want to make sure I won't have DFS replication issues..... What do
you think?

I will leave it up to an DFS expert to answer that... (sorry)
Post by Tina
What do
you think?
Post by Edwin vMierlo [MVP]
no, the other way around, delete the 23 GB partition (well, backup first
obviously)
then you have space to grow the 80GB partition (also, after backup, you
always want to ensure you have backups, just in case)
Post by Tina
That makes sense. I guess the only thing I can do is delete the 80 gb
partition which will add to the current unallocated space of 34 GB. I
should
Post by Tina
then have 114 GB unallocated space. I can create a new partition, format
it
Post by Tina
NTFS and restore the data from backup. Do you see any issues with doing
this?

Tina,

you might want to create a seperate post for you DFS question, this to get
the DFS experts responding
Make sure you post with a "catching" subject line.

Good Luck,
Edwin.
Post by Tina
Thanks so much Edwin. You were a huge help. I will do as you suggested and
delete the 23 gb partition as soon as I figure out how to move the dfs data
to the other partition correctly.
Thanks again!
Tina
Post by Edwin vMierlo [MVP]
I will leave it up to an DFS expert to answer that... (sorry)
Post by Tina
My only concern with deleting the 23 GB partition, is I have DFS setup
(hub
Post by Tina
and spoke setup) on this partition and this server is the DFS hub. The 23
GB
Post by Tina
partition only contains 3 GB of data. Can I simply copy the data including
the DFS share to the 80 GB partition without issue? The DFS share will
have
Post by Tina
the same share name which is "setups." If I can just copy the DFS folder
to
Post by Tina
the 80 gb partition, I can delete the 23 gb partition and extend the 80 gb
partition to take the whole space and leave the DFS share on this
partition.
Post by Tina
Again, I want to make sure I won't have DFS replication issues..... What
do
Post by Tina
should

then have 114 GB unallocated space. I can create a new partition,
format

Hard discs are not made from custard. If you delete a partition, the
free space that is created doesn't coalesce with the free space that
was already there into one big lump. Free space on a hard disc
comprises the holes where parts of the disc have not been allocated to
partitions. Two holes only merge together if they are physically
adjacent. (And even that doesn't always happen if the disc is
partitioned with the MBR partitioning scheme, rather than the EFI
partitioning scheme.) For some pictures that illustrate partitions
and the gaps in between them, see <URL:http://minix3.org./doc/
partitions.html>.

You are very lucky, I just got the useful information about extend partition, I can share with you.
My friend told me, Extend Partition Assistant Professional Edition can work well.
They often resize partition (extend partition, shrink partition?) through it, so, I can promise you--it worth to try.
And this tool has free edition.Choose it or not, depends on you.

I ran the diskpart command on
the server. List volume, select volume 2, extend (did not enter size as I
"The volume you selected may not be extended." I re-ran the command and
entered a size (extend size=20000).

Or please apply SP1 on the server to see if it can help.

Hi Tina,
DiskPart does not support extended partitions currently.
DiskPart does not support extended the system partition.
DiskPart will not format the partition volume with a file system.
If your symptom does not meet the one of scenarios above, I suspect the
issue is related to your RAID 1E configuration.

What do
you think?

Hard discs are not made from custard. If you delete a partition, the
free space that is created doesn't coalesce with the free space that
was already there into one big lump. Free space on a hard disc
comprises the holes where parts of the disc have not been allocated to
partitions. Two holes only merge together if they are physically
adjacent. (And even that doesn't always happen if the disc is
partitioned with the MBR partitioning scheme, rather than the EFI
partitioning scheme.) For some pictures that illustrate partitions
and the gaps in between them, see <URL:http://minix3.org./doc/

Hello, you can use the http://www.extend-partition.com/extend-system-boot-partition.html to have a try. This should take care of your problem. At least it did for me.

I ran the diskpart command on
the server. List volume, select volume 2, extend (did not enter size as I
"The volume you selected may not be extended." I re-ran the command and
entered a size (extend size=20000).

841650: The DiskPart.exe utility cannot extend a logical drive in an
extended partition in Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841650/en-us
Or please apply SP1 on the server to see if it can help.

Yes SP2 is installed on the server as well as all the critical updates.

Hi Tina,
If the SP2 has been applied, Diskpart.exe should be used to extend logical
drive.

I ran diskpart to extend the partition and received the errors listed in my

Post by Ken Zhao [MSFT]
Hi Tina,
DiskPart does not support extended partitions currently.
DiskPart does not support extended the system partition.
DiskPart will not format the partition volume with a file system.
If your symptom does not meet the one of scenarios above, I suspect the
issue is related to your RAID 1E configuration.
Thanks & Regards,
Ken Zhao

Edwin.

Aha !
See this
DISKPART> list partition
Partition ### Type Size Offset
------------- ---------------- ------- -------
Partition 1 Primary 80 GB 32 KB
Partition 2 Primary 23 GB 80 GB
So the first partition is Partition1, and Partition 2 starts at 80Gb offset,
after partition 1
This means that Partition 1 (and therefore volume 0) cannot grow, as it is
"blocked" by Partition 2 (which is volume 1)
so, the free space is after partition2/volume1.... so you can grow volume 1
(not volume 0)
hope this explains it...
Rgds,
Edwin.
