Hi all,

When trying to copy a shared folder (on a windows 2008 server) to any
windows xp computer (from the XP computer), the copy allways fails (error
message in the subject) on files starting with "~$1." and the copy stops.

However when I try copying the same folder from the same share but from a
windows 7 RC computer, the copy succeeds even with files starting with "~$1."

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks !

Let's start by you reporting exactly what mechanism you use for the copy
process. Explorer? Batch file? Copy? XCopy? Robocopy? Script? Other?

Hi all,

After a bit of googling I found out all the files I didn't manage to copy
were Microsoft Office "owner files" as explained in this article :

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/211632/en-us

When a previously saved file is opened for editing, for printing, or for
review, Word creates a temporary file that has a .doc file name extension.
This file name extension begins with a tilde (~) that is followed by a dollar
sign ($) that is followed by the remainder of the original file name. This
temporary file holds the logon name of person who opens the file. This
temporary file is called the "owner file."

For some reason I can't figure out I seem to be unable to copy any "owner
file" when using a windows XP computer but can when using a Windows 7 RC
computer.

Any idea ?

The "owner" file is purely for MS Word internal use. It is normally locked.
There is no point in you attempting to copy it to some other location. If
you wish to pursue this issue further then you should ask the experts in one
of the many MS Word newsgroups.
