I have been tormented by this issue for quite a long time. I've changed
hardware, replaced the OS, and so on, yet the problem persists.

=========================
Original hardware & OS:
Server 2003 Standard x86 w/SP2 on a mirrored 320GB described next

2 - Seagate ST3320620AS Firmware 3.AAC attached to
motherboard supplied Intel 631xESB RAID Controller

12 - ST3750640AS attached to
Areca ARC-1130ML
=========================
=========================
New hardware & OS:
Server 2003 R2 Standard x64 Edition w/SP2
on a mirrored 320GB described next

2 - WDC WD3200AAJS-00RYA0 Firmware 12.01B01 attached to
Areca ARC-1210

12 - ST3750640AS attached to
Areca ARC-1130ML
=========================

The paired 320GB drives are hardware mirrored and the volume is split into a
30GB partition for the OS ( C:\ )and the remaining 270+ GB becomes an
application partition ( E:\ ).

The other 12 drives are a 7TB volume ( D:\ ) and are unrelated to the issue.

=========================
The issue:
This server is the PDC and holds other FSMO roles.
A backup via NTBackup produces errors on almost every backup.
The errors are:

WARNING: Portions of "Some File" cannot be read. The backed up data is
corrupt or incomplete.
This file will not restore correctly.

A backup of the C:\ and E:\ volumes produced 140 errors on our last backup.
I just performed a sequence of 10 backups on the same group of files
( E:\Program Files (x86)\ ) and four of those succeed error free while the
others produced the expected errors on various files. I can forward a copy
of the log upon request.

A backup of the D:\ volume produces no errors regardless of how many times I
attempt a backup.

I've read similar reports that seem to pertain to Exchange user's problems.
It makes me wonder if it is related to VSS. I've not only cahnged the
underlying hardware on the suspect drives, but the OS as well.

In view of the size of your operation, then length of time you've battled
with your problem and the fact that you haven't received any responses
here, I recommend you lodge a service call with Microsoft. There will
be a charge (unless it turns out that the problem is due to a bug) but
the charge is very moderate in comparison with the benefit you reap
and the amount it costs your company to try and resolve it through
you, and potentially not being able to retrieve important files.

Hi,

You can try a popular BKF file recovery tool called Advanced BKF Repair to repair your BKF file. It is a powerful tool to repair corrupt or damaged BKF files.

Detailed information about Advanced BKF Repair can be found at http://www.datanumen.com/abr/

And you can also download a free demo version at http://www.datanumen.com/abr/abr.exe
