File Server Resource Manager

Hi

I'm having some trouble getting File Server Resource Manager to create quotas.

When I try to create a new quota I receive a message "The Quota
Management Filter Driver Service or File Screening Filter Driver service is
not running".

I've installed FRSM as per Technet article
(http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/library/3cb63d86-964f-45e8-a76f-1bf72676b0751033.mspx?mfr=true).

(Actually I've installed / uninstalled it a couple of times and still keep
getting the same response.)

I've checked the server's installed services and neither of these services
are listed in the Services tab - but from the way the install guide's
phrased I'm guessing these are supposed to be installed by Windows when I
install FRSM.

Sooo ... how do I go about getting FRSM to create me a quota or two?

[We're using Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition R2, SP1 running on a PDC.]

Hi Simon,

You should have a File Server Resource Manager service. This service
loads the filter drivers that are used for File Server Manager
service. If you run fltmc at the command prompt, it will show you all
of the installed filter drivers. You should see:

Datascrn
Quota

If those are there and the File Server Resource Manager service is
running you should be good to go.

Well Jamie looks like you've identified what's causing the problem for
me - fltmc at the command prompt states:

Filter Name Num Instances Frame
------------------------------ ------------- -----
UdfReadr_xp <Legacy>
cdudf_xp <Legacy>
DfsDriver <Legacy>
Datascrn 0 0
Quota 0 0

...

The obvious thing to do, then would be to unload & load the filter
drivers.

...

OK - I've unloaded & re-loaded the Datascrn and Quota filter drivers -
no fix I'm sorry to say. I've tried it with the File Server Resource
Manager service running, and without it running but it makes no
difference.

I still get the same message as before ("The Quota Management Filter
Driver Service or File Screening Filter Driver service is not
running").

Also (and rather irritatingly) there's nothing in any of the event
logs that will help me track down why the system thinks these filters
are loaded, but they're not working.

Any more thoughts?

I've done some more investigation.

fltmc attach Quota "\Device\Harddisk1\DP(1)0x4000-0x4e18194000+3"

fails with

Attach failed with error: 0x80070001
Incorrect function.

as does fltmc attach Quota \Device
\Harddisk1\DP(1)0x4000-0x4e18194000+3

fltmc attach Quota '\Device\Harddisk1\DP(1)0x4000-0x4e18194000+3'

fails with

Attach failed with error: 0x801f0014
The system could not find the volume specified.

fltmc attach Quota "E:"
fltmc attach Quota E:
fltmc attach Quota 'E:'

produce the same errors as above

fltmc volumes produces this list:

Dos Name Volume Name
------------------------------
---------------------------------------
C: \Device
\Harddisk0\DP(1)0x4000-0x752660000+2
E: \Device
\Harddisk1\DP(1)0x4000-0x4e18194000+3
\Device\LanmanRedirector
\Device\RdpDr
D: \Device\CdRom0
D: \Device\CdRom0

I've tried the Driver Verifier tool but it requires me to reboot the
PDC and obviously I can't just turn off the PDC as people are working
on it.

Well I've rebooted the server several times, uninstalled & re-installed the
FSRM service repeatedly, tried loading & unloading the device drivers & still
no luck. There's nothing on TechNet regarding this particular error.

Help!
