More than likely malware is to blame.

Thanks - I ran the complete scan and no viruses or spyware were found there
were some registry problems which were resolved - however the problem remains
- in fact on the last start the whole address book folder was missing.
I have used batch files to save and replace the missing files but I would
still like to find the underlying cause. Could something in the registry
cause deletions - if so what would I look for.
Thanks again

Could also be file system corruption but I don't believe this because you
say the same files/directories are being targeted. Are the directories
within the profile? If so your user profile may be continually getting
recreated because of some corruption in \default user

Failing this I'd download and run the manufacturer's disk diagnostics as a
last resort before I clean installed the operating system.

I eventually did a windows restore to a three week old point which cured the
problem but did raise one or two issues of out of date data and lost
programmes which needed to be reinstalled. Otherwise now fine.
