Junction Point removal
(too old to reply)

I just bought a new pc with Windows 7.

I transferred my 28 000+ photographs and the picture program where they are
all tagged. I copied the "tag holder" .dat file from this other program to
maintain the tags. They are hard coded from the days of Windows XP and have
to be in a subfolder of "Documents and Settings". (If I move the photos the
.dat file from the picture program drops the tags).

So far so good. But when I created C:\Documents and Settings - Windows 7 -
very annoyingly butted in and created a "folder junction point" which means
that "C:/users/" is now identical to "C:/Documents and Settings/". This gives
me a very unfortunate folder name conflict in the subfolders of C:\Users and
C:\Documents and Settings". So I need to remove it. I can't find that option.

So without going into "how do I turn off every feature in which Windows
tries to help me by guessing what I am trying to do and totally gets it
wrong" my bottom line is

....How do I permantly remove the "junction point folder link" between
"C:/Users" and "C:/Documents and Settings"

Any help greatly appreciated.

I get the impression that Microsoft is going out of its way to make the
management of junction points difficult. Windows Explorer does not show them
and tools such as mlink.exe or linkd.exe are usually specific to one or the
other version of Windows and are hard to find. You can use a SysInternals
tool, junction.exe,
(http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896768.aspx) to create,
list or delete your junction points. Enjoy!

SOLVED:

Thanks Pegaus, however I had already googled my way to
http://www.rekenwonder.com/linkmagic.htm
Junction Link Magic, a handy little tool that can reveal, create and delete
all junction boxes.
To recap on the problem
This time I was lucky, in all my copying back and forth when system
migrating I thought I had copied folder1 to c:\users\folder1 by mistake so I
deleted it and all its contents as I already had that folder in "documents
and settings"

This of course deleted "c:\documents and settings\folder1 and all its
valuble contents. In an attempt to be user friendly Microsoft actually
annoyed me.

Of course I had these files backed up but the next person might not. I still
can not fathom why there is a feature that if a user creates a folder that
once existed in xp that it will automaticly have a junction point assigned to
it.

Having been in the game 30 years (started out as an op on a 370-148
mainframe in 79) I like to be in control of what happens on my pc and why.
Still, I got away with this hiccup, hope the word is spread about junction
link magic...
